In General
The metaphors of the mountains, rivers, and agricultural land of the natural world have taught and inspired people throughout history. For me, I go to these places to understand how to live. By going back into nature, concepts such as perseverance or fear become distilled down to singular and concrete experiences.
It's like this: The top of the mountain takes every step to reach. The next bolt on the climb is not getting any closer to you, so trust in your ability and reach for the next hold and step up. When in doubt, paddle like hell. I would be lost at sea without these beacons. When I gain courage on a climb, I am able to take this visceral experience and apply it in other parts of my life. Knowing courage on a climb is knowing courage at my job, with my relationships, or just with the general hardships that come with a human life.
Yoga appeared when I began searching for relief from injuries sustained in the mountain sports and manual labor in my early 20's. My injuries were primarily due to poor form and poor biomechanical alignment and execution of movement. Yoga has given me the gifts of pain relief, proper posture, and an ever-improving control of my BREATH which helps in the mountains and relationships!
Mountain Yogi is a place where I can bring these worlds together. I'm thinking of it like a cabin in the woods where I can go to think about the world and try to make sense of it. My hope is that many people will want to visit and talk.
On 'A Mountain Yogi Wanders' Blog
I have enjoyed writing throughout my life. In high school, I worked as the news section editor in the school. Along with this role, I was privileged in experience to write a monthly editorial column that I titled 'Words from Will'. Very clever title ;) I have been wanting to continue the thought train for some time and have decided to start blogging. I want to blog about mountains, land management, rivers, rock climbing, yoga, the nervous system, or whatever I feel like.
On "Classic Colorado Climbs"
I have had dreams of climbing many of the great mountaineering routes of CO since I was 13. These "Classic" routes (as I'm calling them) are often some of the first (recorded) major mountaineering and rock-climbing feats in Colorado's history. I have climbed a few of them over the years, mostly as belay buddy. Taking the sharp end of the rope and leading the route, however, has always been my ambition. After many attempts on pursuing this goal, I have finally found myself with the gear, focus, minimum training, and general wherewithal to start leading routes. I will be sharing my journeys through my blog and social media to any and all who are interested.
Yoga Instruction
I am a life-long beginner in yoga. Since I started in my early 20's, I have wanted to create a routine of yoga to support the training for mountaineering, river sports, and cycling. As a long-term project, I am building a studio of practitioners who want to focus on yoga for these activities as well as athletic performance and training in general.
Whether just getting into a mountain sport or merely supplementing, buying used is a great option when needing to purchase gear. First of all, buying used gear lowers initial investment which obviously makes the sport more accessible. Mountain sports can be pricey and participating in them can be cost prohibitive for many. Secondly, buying used gear gives life to something that might otherwise sit on a shelf or be put into the landfill. It's just being practical and helping to reduce waste. Lastly, it helps the user discover what kind of gear benefits them the most without an enormous investment. I've been buying and using second-hand gear my whole life and always recommend it to my friends, whether expert or novice.
